What is FirstNet?

Established in 2012 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, FirstNet is the first network of its kind in the United States. FirstNet is a single, interoperable network dedicated singularly for public safety use. It’s mission is to deploy, operate, and maintain high-speed, nationwide wireless broadband to support optimal communications amongst public safety personnel in mission critical situations. What makes FirstNet different from other broadband providers is its exclusivity. FirstNet is designated specifically for first responders and other personnel that support first responders' efforts. Those that can subscribe to FirstNet include, but are not limited to, law enforcement, fire protection services, emergency (911) call dispatching and government Public Safety Answering Points, emergency planning and management offices, and emergency medical services.

Those using the FirstNet network have access to all AT&T LTE commercial spectrum bands. In addition to AT&T’s already reliable network, first responders and public safety personnel have access to a dedicated 20 MHz frequency spectrum within LTE Band 14 (700 MHz). Band 14 is a nationwide, high-quality spectrum set aside by the U.S. government specifically for FirstNet subscribers. You could consider FirstNet Band 14 as public safety’s VIP lane to high performance, high speed connection. First responders need reliable, highly-secure connectivity at all times while on the job, whether it be while performing routine tasks in a highly congested area, like a sports arena or in a crisis situation.
