The CopperLink CL1214E industrial Ethernet extender from Patton Electronics aggregates four Fast Ethernet streams onto a single twisted pair or Cat cable to deliver IP traffic 1.8 miles (3 km) away - well beyond the standard 328-foot (100-meter) Ethernet distance limitation. The line interface between two CL1214E modems may be an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or coax cable. A built-in 4-port Fast Ethernet switch offers simultaneous connections to remote end devices. With symmetrical line rates up to 168 Mbps, the CopperLink CL1214E eliminates throughput constraints found in other copper-based transmission technologies. It can reuse existing copper cables (single twisted-pair or Cat 5e/6/7) previously laid in legacy alarm circuits, E1/T1 circuits, RS-485 serial controls, CCTV, and CATV.
Four user-selectable configuration profiles, combined with Patton’s auto-rate adaptation, ensure maximum symmetrical or asymmetrical rates given the noise environment, wire gauge/type, and length. Symmetrical line-rate settings are ideal for remote LAN extensions, video teleconferencing, and data backhaul. Whereas, asymmetrical configurations are well-suited for applications requiring higher downstream speeds or longer distances between Ethernet devices. Typical asymmetrical networks include medical imaging, livestock monitoring, underwater video, internet gaming, and streaming high-resolution video from IP cameras.
Operating as a pair, two CL1214E units are configured via a switch as a Local unit (L) located at one end of the LAN, typically near the network center. The other CL1214E is configured as the Remote unit (R) and located at the network edge. These units automatically forward LAN broadcasts, multicasts, and frames across a 2-wire voice-grade twisted-pair link. The data passes transparently (unmodified) through the CL1214E. The CL1214E units automatically add and delete MAC addresses, only passing packets across the CopperLink line that are meant for the remote peered LAN. The CL1214E is fully compatible with the Model 2174. When using the 2174, like the CL1214E, one unit must be local and the other remote. For example, when CL1214E is set to local, the 2174 must be set to remote.
