The CopperLink CL1214 Ethernet extender from Patton Electronics merges four Fast Ethernet data streams onto a single line to deliver IP traffic 1.8 miles (3 km) away - well beyond the 328-foot (100-meter) standard Ethernet distance. The line interface between two CL1214 devices may be an unshielded twisted pair (UTP), coax, or Cat 5e/6/7 cable. An integrated 4-port Fast Ethernet switch offers simultaneous connections to remote end devices. With symmetrical line rates up to 168 Mbps, the CopperLink CL1214 eliminates throughput constraints found in other copper-based network technologies. It can reuse existing copper cables previously installed in legacy alarm circuits, E1/T1 circuits, RS-485 serial controls, CCTV, and CATV.
Four user-selectable profiles, combined with Patton’s auto-rate adaptation, ensure maximum symmetrical or asymmetrical rates given the noise environment, wire gauge/type, and length. Symmetrical line-rate settings are ideal for remote LAN extensions, video teleconferencing, and data backhaul. Whereas, asymmetrical transfers are best for applications requiring higher downstream speeds or longer distances between Ethernet devices. Typical asymmetrical networks include medical imaging, livestock monitoring, underwater video, internet gaming, and streaming high-resolution video from IP cameras.
Operating as a pair, one CL1214 unit is configured via a switch as a Local unit and located at one end of the LAN, typically near the network hub. The other CL1214 is configured as the Remote unit and located at the network edge. The units automatically forward LAN broadcasts, multicasts, and frames across the CopperLink line interface. Data passes transparently (unmodified) through the CL1214 units. The CL1214 automatically adds and deletes MAC addresses and only passes packets across the CopperLink line meant for the remote LAN.
