Patton Electronics’ 222N9 line of serial converters connects computers, PLCs, and sensors employing an RS-232 interface with a DB-9 connector to RS-422 devices. It supports data rates up to 19.2 kbps over two twisted-pair lines. The module takes power for its operation from the data and control voltages on the RS-232 signals - it does not require an external power source. All handshaking lines are looped back on the RS-232 interface.

The 222N9 features bi-directional data conversion at full or half-duplex, supporting distances to 3.5 miles. An external switch selects computer/terminal (DTE) or a modem (DCE) for the serial port, eliminating the need for a crossover cable. The 222N9 is available with a choice of RS-422 connector options: DB-9 male or female, RJ11, RJ45, or direct wire into terminal blocks with strain relief.

The surge-protected models, 222NS9, stand up to transients and directs spikes safely to chassis ground. Compliant with IEC 801.5 level 2, 1kV, the 222NS9 protects connected equipment from lightning strikes and electromagnetic radiation.
