Patton 1009 RS-232 Self-Powered Short-Range Modem up to 17 Miles over Twisted Pairs

The Model 1009 asynchronous short-range modem from Patton Electronics allows two asynchronous RS-232 devices with DB-9 connectors to communicate at distances to 17 miles. Operating at full-duplex over two unconditioned twisted pairs, the 1009 supports data rates from 300 to 19,200 bps. It draws all necessary operating power from the RS-232 interface, requiring no external power or batteries.

The 1009 line driver connects directly to legacy PCs, Unisys 6000/7000 computers, NCR towers, and other RS-232 machines with DB-9 serial ports. Its ultra-miniature size (2.50" x 1.20" x 0.75") fits into very small spaces. For the twisted pair connection, choose from an RJ-11, RJ-45, or DB9 male or female connector. The 1009 is compatible with Patton’s Model 1000 and 1015 short haul devices.

The 1009S version (Surge & Isolation Protection option) withstands environments prone to lightning storms, static discharge, and other forms of EMR. It implements the latest in bi-directional, clamping transient suppressors to guard itself and connected equipment against data line transients. It’s compliant with IEC 801.5, Level 2, 1 kV surge protection.

Key Features

  • Extends RS-232 asynchronous communications up to 17 Miles (27.2 km)
  • Full duplex, asynchronous operation over 4 wires (two twisted pairs)
  • 300 to 19,200 bps baud rate
  • One DB-9 interface with choice of DB-9, RJ11, or RJ45 for the second connector
  • Two devices required (point-to-point)
  • 0 to 50°C operating temperature
  • No power required - uses ultra-low power from RS-232 EIA data and control signals
  • Optional surge protection and isolation
