Panorama SAMS-NP-NBJ Multi-Surge Suppressor Protects Against Lightning Strikes

The SAMS-NP-NBJ multi-surge arrester offers flexible light-duty surge protection. It features N-Type male to N-Type female (bulkhead) connectors allowing it to be mounted inline between the antenna’s coaxial feeder cable and a radio or cellular router. The surge arrester operates between 0 and 6 GHz with low return and insertion loss. It is fitted with a bulkhead for connecting to earth ground or mounting into an electrical panel with a maximum thickness of 6.5 mm (0.25”). The SAMS-NP-NBJ may accept a heavy-duty earth tag as well.

The SAMS-NP-NBJ surge arrester protects equipment from transients induced by lightning strikes or other significant electrical charges by preventing most of the voltage surge from entering the equipment. It will not protect from a direct lightning strike. Under a high voltage surge, the premium Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) conducts and provides a low resistance path to ground, diverting the surge from reaching the equipment. It can handle multiple strikes and will return to a non-conductive state following a surge. The GDT does not need to be replaced. The SAMS-NP-NBJ allows DC to pass, so it can be used for an active GPS/GNSS antenna where a DC voltage is supplied on the cable to power the antenna LNA (Low Noise Amplifier).

Installation Tips

A low resistance ground or earth point must be available for the arrester to be effective. The preferred location is as close to the antenna as possible, connected to a grounding bar or earth strap. Alternatively, you may use an enclosure entry point, with the arrester bulkhead mounted to a low-resistance grounded panel.
