Multi-drop RS-422 / RS-485 serial networks have been a standard means of acquiring low-speed sensor data for decades. However, how do you connect to a modern system that lacks a serial interface? One solution is to convert the serial stream to USB. The UTS-1458A from Antaira Technologies is a simple adapter designed to connect RS-422 / RS-485 serial-based equipment to a computer's standard USB port. It features a USB type B connector on one end of the cable and a terminal block with a DB-9 connector and signal conversion electronics on the other. Locking screws on the DB-9 connector secure the cable and protect against accidental disconnection. The USB plug-and-play architecture includes a smart software wizard. Installation is simple and straightforward. Your computer will recognize the new USB device and install it automatically. The UTS-1458A is excellent for connecting legacy serial equipment to the latest laptops and computers.
