Patton FiberPlex FOI-2990 Extends Relay and Control Signal over Fiber Optics

The FOI-2990 series from Patton Electronics provide electrical isolation and extension of control signals and relay closures. The units expand the distance between sensors to response indicators to 2 km (see diagram below) over internal multimode fiber optics. A pair of FOI-2990 extenders are ideal in areas with high electrical noise or for transmitting information through RF shielded enclosures. Fiber optic cable is not susceptible to interference caused by impulse noise, crosstalk, or EMI. The units are uni-directional.

The FOI-2991 and FOI-2992 are optical transmitters and accept up to 12 individual DC control signals. The FOI-2991 is compatible with 0 to +5 volt signals, whereas the FOI-2992 supports a DC or AC voltage from +12 to +24V. The FOI-2993 has 12 SPST Form A latching relays, and the FOI-2994 has 8 SPDT Form C latching relays. The FOI-2995 and FOI-2996 have non-latching relays. During power interruptions or failures, the relays on the FOI-2993 and FOI-2994 will hold the last commanded state until power is restored, and the relays are commanded differently. The FOI-2995 and FOI-2996 will revert to the open state. These models are optical receivers.

A typical link consists of an FOI-2991 or FOI-2992 at one end of the network, which transmits optical signals to an FOI-2993 or FOI-2994 at the other end. A single fiber-optic cable is between two units.
