The FiberPlex FOI-2890 from Patton Electronics converts 6 industrial communications channels (4 control channels and 2 RS-232 channels) to multimode fiber. The FOI-2890 accepts control and serial communication through a DB25 connection and communicates on fiber lines terminated with two ST connectors. Fiber-optic cables support transmission distances longer than copper wiring. Multimode optics within the unit extends the distance to 2 km. A typical link consists of dual FOI-2890 modules, one at each end of the network, with a duplex fiber optic cable between them.
Offering complete electrical isolation, it’s ideal in areas of high electrical noise or for transmitting data in and out of RF shielded enclosures. Because fiber-optic lines are not susceptible to interference caused by impulse noise, crosstalk, or EMI, it’s a preferred communication medium in these environments. Privacy is enhanced because fiber optic cables do not radiate any emissions. The FOI-2890 extends the reach of intercom, alarm, and emergency notification systems.
